Saltillo Volunteer Fire Department will be serving up stew and chili Saturday as part of the department’s annual fundraiser.

Chicken and beef stew and chili will be served starting around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, and continuing until it’s all gone, at Saltillo VFD, located on U.S. Highway 67 east, between the post office and school. There’ll also be some desserts, donated by firefighters and their families.

Also, SVFD members will be raffling off a Savage .223 rifle in full camouflage with scope; two pre-paid Mastercards, each worth $250; and a 30-inch electric smoker with remote control. Tickets are available in advance for $2 each or six for $10 from any Saltillo VFD member, at ABC Autoplex and Weaver store, or can be obtained at the benefit Saturday. Each ticket represents one chance for one of the four prizes. Which means a person who purchases more than one ticket could potentially win more than one prize. The drawing for all four raffle items will be conducted during the fundraiser Saturday; winners do not have to be present to win.

This is Saltillo VFD’s one annual fundraiser, which allows the community to enjoy fellowship with members, find out more about the department and contribute as they choose. Cost is by donation, so Saltillo residents can give as much as they’re able or want to contribute.

All proceeds from the stew, chili and raffles will go to Saltillo VFD to help with upkeep and repairs. Funds from this year’s benefit have been designated specifically for repairs on the department’s engine and to upgrade the light package on one of the trucks to give it more visibility for safety purposes when being utilized on the interstate.

According to SVFD members, of the approximately 45 calls the department has answered in the last three months, at least a third of them have been fires and wrecks on Interstate 30. The upgrade to a brush truck’s light package will make it more visible to warn oncoming traffic of emergency responders working in the area.

Those attending will also be eligible to win donated door prizes, which will also be given out during the afternoon.

The department currently responds to structure, grass, medical and vehicle rescue calls.

Saltillo VFD’s coverage area spans east to the Franklin County line. Its northern sector spans to County Road 3542 at County Road 3546 and FM 900 north at FM 69 north, then dips south into Flora at County Road 3535. The western border spans from Flora down to County Road 3520 down to 3518. The south border then spans east from the curve at County Road 3521 to County Road 3528, follows County Road 3526, 3528, and 3531 to Interstate 30. The southern border then continues along eastbound I-30 to CR 3354, turning south of I-30 along County Road 3385 and 3371, across FM 3105 to CR 3374 and the county line, according to the Ark-Tex Council of Government’s fire districts’ map.

Anyone who would like to make a donation to Saltillo VFD but who cannot or does not plan to attend the stew/chili event Saturday can mail donations to Saltillo VFD, 412 County Road 3350, Saltillo, Texas 75478.
